On 5 June 2023, REGROUP partner Jacques Delors Institute held an open webinar titled “The Eurozone crisis, the Covid pandemic, the war in Ukraine… How to govern Europe in times of crises?”. Introduced by JDI director Sébastien Maillard, the event featured a keynote addressed by former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta, and a discussion with Thierry Chopin, WP6 leader Federico Fabbrini, and REGROUP advisory board members Brigid Laffan and Lena Kolarska-Bobińska, moderated by REGROUP member Eulalia Rubio. Those who were not able to attend the event live can now watch a recording of the webinar and hear the speakers’ views on some key themes of REGROUP.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR

Over the past fifteen years the European Union has been confronted with a succession of crises across different policy areas, ranging from the Eurozone crisis to the Covid pandemic and, more recently, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. What lessons can we draw from the way the EU has reacted to these crises? Are crises always a driver of further integration, as Jean Monnet predicted, or can they – in certain circumstances – lead to a weakening of the Union? Looking ahead, is EU governance well equipped to deal with future crises? Do member states have similar views about the necessity to reform the EU so as to increase its crisis-management capacity? How to strengthen the EU’s capacity to respond to crises without undermining democratic principles and ensuring parliamentary accountability?
